A brief history of Shower Curtains

The very first shower curtains or bath curtains as they were originally called were made of cloth. All bath tubs at that time were fitted with poles attached to a circular rod that held a curtain around it in order to give privacy to the bather. The very first showers were of these self contained units where the water was reused several times since the bather had to physically remove the water and replenish it every time. Initially this curtain was just used for privacy and was not coated in any way to be water resistant. However as showers gradually moved into the main house instead of being housed in a separate outside area the need to keep the water from running all over the floors became more important. Gradually over time different curtain materials and weaves were developed which led to the first mostly water-resistant shower curtains that we are more familiar with today. Nowadays you can find shower curtains made from all sorts of different fabrics, however the most common are still almost always made with a vinyl type backing or inner curtain to keep the water inside the bath tub or the shower tray.
