A brief history of Candles

It is believed that very many of the worlds early civilizations had developed some form of candle by using a wax made from whatever plants or insects that could be found locally with a wick down the middle. It is known that candles also played an important role in early religious ceremonies as well - such as the Jewish Festival of Hanukkah which is a festival dedicated to light. This is believed to have started around 165 BC. In most western cultures in the Middle ages candles were made from animal fat - also known as Tallow. Unfortunately these sort of candles when burned produced a bad smell in the room. A major step forward was made when it was discovered that beeswax could also be used instead, with the added benefit that these candles burned with a nice sweet smell instead. Anyone during that period who made candles was referred to a Chandler, which is still a popular surname in England still today.
